It features the Masorah Magna and Parva, the Aramaic Targum Onkelos, as well as extensive commentaries by important medieval Jewish scholars including Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and David Kimhi. The text is arranged in four columns, with the inner two containing the Biblical text and its Targum, and the outer two containing the exegetical commentaries (Williams, 2016).

Daniel Bomberg's Hebrew Bible was the standard until replaced by the Leningrad Codex in 1937 (Burnett, 2012). It was Bomberg's edition that was utilised by the translators for the King James Version, as well as by John Calvin, and it was Bomberg's edition that the Dead Sea Scrolls were compared against to demonstrate the accuracy of the preservation of the text across time. Bomberg's printing was of such a high standard of quality that subsequent books advertised themselves as being printed with "Bomberg type" (Habermann, 1971). "The books printed by Daniel Bomberg in 16th century Venice have long been admired as masterpieces of Hebrew typography... foremost among the books that earned him this reputation was the Rabbinic Bible. We sold two fine volumes of Bomberg's Biblia Rabbinica (second and third editions) in beautiful fine bindings around a year ago for the very competitive price of £22,500 (~$30,000 USD), and so here is an excellent opportunity to acquire a part of one of the most influential Hebrew Bibles from almost certainly the most important printing press in the Hebrew language.

-------------------

Size: 292 x 415 mm (approx.)

Condition:

203 leaves present, lacking some leaves at each end of the text block to include the title leaf and colophon, as often. Paper over cloth backed boards, worn with some paper losses, pen inscription to one of the boards. Binding attached and secure with both boards securely attached, functional. Holes to the first and last few leaves, small after the first 2-3 leaves on each end (prominently affecting ~6 leaves), those leaves also have some heavy dampstaining, text loss. However, throughout the majority of the text, there is only mild dampstaining or light stains/toning, occasional minor loss to some leaves, spotting to each end of the text block, fair condition, but generally legible throughout. Some early Hebrew marginalia in places throughout, generally sporadic, in an extremely neat hand. Purple ink inscription in Hebrew to one leaf roughly in the middle of the text with some bleeding through to the page before and after; this inscription seems to be an acquisition note (the handwriting is a bit unclear), but seems to be dated to 5406 (i.e. 1645 CE/AD), various other inscriptions, one drawing, as well as a few old Hebrew manuscripts loosely placed between some sheets.

Overall a fair copy, in the condition typically encountered owing to its evident extensive use over the centuries, of this very important edition of the Biblia Rabbinica which is largely unobtainable aside from facsimiles.

Bibliography:

Burnett, S.
