The author was a diplomat during the time of William Shakespeare and reign of King James I (of King James Bible fame). He was associated with many major persons of the 17th century both in Britain and the Continent, including Paolo Sarpi, whose History of the Council of Trent was "sent to King James as fast as it was written," as well as the famous angler, Izaak Walton. In this work, there are twenty-five printed poems, of which fifteen are by Wotton. One of Wotton's most famous quotes is "an ambassador is an honest gentleman sent to lie abroad for the good of his country."

This copy is an attractive early one, in contemporary panelled calf boards and finely rebacked.

-------------------

Size: 115 x 176 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Contemporary calf boards, Cambridge panelled design, later finely rebacked, both boards securely attached with the binding secure.
