A handsome copy preserved in the original publisher's cloth binding, increasingly scarce in such a presentable condition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThere were a total of 8,950 copies bound up and sold of the complete first edition run of The Hobbit across the first four impressions of the main George, Allen \u0026amp; Unwin issues (the fifth impression was the start of the second edition). This makes surviving copies from these first four issues which comprise the first edition genuinely scarce. There were 1,488 copies of the first impression (plus 21 review copies), 1,900 copies of the second, 1,509 copies of the third impression, and 4,032 copies of the fourth impression. Slight separation of backstrip from board edges at the rear side (as often), but with both hinges secure and uncracked. Maps at endpapers show very nicely indeed without toning indicating that this copy has been without its dust jacket for the majority of its lifetime. Contemporary ink ownership inscription to a preliminary blank (preceding the half-title). Collates as complete, including the final leaf which is often lacking (with the advertisements, verso).
