This work was originally released in 1937 in a very small print run of just 1,500 copies. The second issue followed the subsequent year with ~2,300 copies (of which ~400 copies were destroyed), and this third issue was released in a print run of 1,500 copies (plus 3,000 \"book club\" copies). That makes this copy one of the first 4,900-5,300 copies printed, excluding the book club copies, being one of the earliest obtainable copies of The Hobbit, and is particularly desirable for the illustrations which were not present in the first issue. Light pencil price to upper corner of ffep recto, remnants of a removed sticker to verso blank. Colour frontispiece extant and in excellent bright condition. Small inscription to title leaf verso, three small ink corrections to first page of text. Colophon \u0026amp; advertisement leaf extant. Generally bright and clean throughout the text.
