Provenance:

Ownership inscriptions of Eliz Riddele and " Alex (?) 1862" , and a red stamp inscribed "The Scotsman Edinburgh".

And,

The front boards bear an armorial crests depicting a hand holding something above a shield with three stars and a bird.

Condition: 

[i-xvi, pp.1-286], [title, contents (4pp.), pp.1-206, pp.211-368], [i-xlvii, pp.1-334], [title, contents (2pp.), pp.1-234, pp.255-379].

 

Spines rubbed, lightly cracked, and with prominent white marks. Tooled labels present. Wear to heads and bottoms of spines with some small fragments lacking. Joints have previously been repaired, now the joints are cracked. Front boards of volumes two and three detached. Other boards with worn or cracked hinges. Boards with some uneven sunning/discolouration, very minor superficial scratches, and few small marks. Three larger scratches and a very small leather fragment lacking from the rear board of volume one. Some remnant (?) on the front board of volume two. Prominent shelf and edge wear with rubbed corners. Shelf lean. Shelf mark labels attached to the top of all front boards; the label on volume three is lacking a small fragment. Dulling to page edges. Red stamps on pastedowns and some endpapers in all volumes. Pen ownership inscriptions on ffep in all volumes. Edge toning as commensurate with the binding to endpapers and title pages of volumes three and four; pp.368 in volume two also affected. Sporadic and minor pen and pencil underlining/marks on some pages (see list below). Lacking pp.207-210 in volume two. Very small tear to the bottom of leaf numbered 99/100 in volume four (does not affect text). Lacking pp.235-254 in volume four.
