A VERY RARE EDITION - DOES NOT APPEAR IN HERBERT.

John Baskett is famous for producing the most magnificent English Bibles of the 18th century, and infamous for the many textual errors which crept in to most of the editions. This edition of the Baskett Bible is a lovely one and very comprehensive for also having the Psalms at the rear and most of a Book of Common Prayer at the beginning.

Full reverse calf binding, rebacked preserving earlier boards which are mounted within the new reverse calf binding, probably mid 20th century. Binding rubbed with loss of gilt to spine. Both boards securely attached with endpapers replaced, but preserving the original front pastedown and blank with provenance information, and interesting manuscript remedies. Front hinge reinforced. Page edges with some discolouration as typical. Text block trimmed for the binding as often, occasionally catching a few letters of the titles and on a few leaves a few letters at the edge of the text, but the text block reads continuously without loss of sense. Book of common prayer bound at the beginning lacks gathering A else collates as complete. Old and New Testaments collate as complete. Book of Psalms bound at the rear, collates as complete but the final leaf with the printer's device is torn, lacking approximately a third of the upper part of the leaf, and thus part of the Gloria Patri prayer, but retains all of the Psalms as published. The text block is mildly toned throughout, but remarkably clean and remains internally very attractive. A very readable antique King James Bible with very interesting 18th century manuscript medical recipes.
