Antique King James Bible 1765
Antique King James Bible 1765
The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly Translated Out of the Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, by His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Cambridge: Joseph Bentham, 1765.
A STUNNING ANTIQUE KING JAMES BIBLE PRINTED IN CAMBRIDGE IN 1765, A BEAUTIFUL BINDING REMINISCENT OF THE ROYAL BINDERS OF THE POST ENGLISH RESTORATION PERIOD.
-------------------
"In this Bible a serious attempt was made to correct the text of the King James Version" (D&M). This edition did perhaps the best attempt up to this time to correct the various errors in the original KJV.
Almost certainly bound in Cambridge with the gilt tooling to the boards resembling the classic Cambridge panelled binding. This is a very rare edition and is not the version recorded in Darlow & Moule's bibliography, number 1163, as at the bottom of the title page it says "Price 3s. unbound", which is a very rare imprint of the aforementioned edition which has been scored out in a contemporary hand in our copy. This means that our binding is almost certainly the original binding as this was one of the very rare imprints which was sold unbound in the publisher's sheets for the buyers to have bound according to their wishes.

Stunning contemporary full smooth red morocco finely tooled in gilt to the spine with gilt panelled design to the boards in the manner popularised by the Mearne bindery (Royal binder) following the restoration. Spine uniformly sunned, rubbed with very minor loss at extremities. Shows very attractively on the shelf. All edges gilt, a little dulled at the top as typical. Joints a little rubbed but with both boards securely attached, the binding secure, and without shelf lean. Boards slightly bowed as typical. Boards scuffed with some scratches, the front board being the most affected. Shelf wear. Ink ownership inscription to head of ffep. Generally clean throughout but a few leaves (5 pages) throughout have ink scribbles, some of which obscures the text.
