The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the Original Tongues: and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1786, large 4to.

-------------------

A beautiful antique King James Bible printed in 1786 at the famous Clarendon Press in Oxford. A splendid example in completely original condition in its original unrestored binding. The text of this copy is remarkably clean and the contemporary marbled calf binding is attractive.

-------------------

Provenance:

Purchased in mid-June 1791 by John Timbrell according to his inscription to the front pastedown, with his later very attractive large ownership inscription to the ffep dated 1801 which suggests at that time he lived in Bentham, a small town in North Yorkshire, England.

Size: 240 x 300 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Original contemporary full marbled calf binding, rubbed, with minor losses to the leather as typical, leather a little dry, shelf and edge wear, joints starting. Both boards are securely attached. No external identification features (i.e. no tooled labels, no gilt titles, etc), as originally bound. No attached bookplates, contemporary ownership inscriptions to front endpapers as detailed in the provenance section, above. Exceptionally clean throughout the text block, a few scattered marks/stains, else a genuinely remarkable copy internally. Rear endpaper detached but present. Uncollated, but appears to be complete.
