The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and the New Testament, and the Apocrypha, with Critical, Philological, and Explanatory Notes. By the Rev. John Hewlett. In Three Volumes. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Co, 1812, 4tos, a.e.g.
-------------------
A magnificent finely bound set of the King James Bible, attractively illustrated throughout. This set truly is a visual masterpiece, with beautiful uniform contemporary full blue leather bindings with finely tooled gilt to spines and turn-ins with a striking tooled morocco presentation plate to the front pastedowns dated 1813. One of the best KJV Bible sets of this period we have ever seen, and with the books of the Bible divided intelligently into the separate volumes rather than the frequently encountered strange divisions one sees in sets. A set which is a genuine pleasure to read with beautiful well-sized type, generous margins, good quality paper, and a huge number of illustrations (including maps).

Size: 250 x 321 mm (approx.)
Condition:
Contemporary full blue calf finely tooled in gilt to spines in compartments between raised bands, each end of the spines finely tooled, turn-ins in gilt with large finely tooled presentation bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Bindings a little rubbed, but generally very good, some discolouration to boards, minor sunning. All edges gilt, very good. All boards securely attached, hinges very good without having been reinforced. Generally bright and clean throughout the text blocks, some light scattered spotting, mild toning, plates offset to verso blanks as typical, tissue guards present. The tissue guards are often more heavily foxed as is typical, but therefore have well served their function.
