Biblia Sacra sive Testamentum vestus ab Im: Fremellio et Fr. Purio ex Hebreo latine redditum et Testamentu novum a Theod. Beza e Graeco in Latinu vers: Londini, 1656.
The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments. Latin text in two columns throughout with an engraved title page. Printed in London in 1656.

-------------------

A lovely early edition of the Bible printed just prior to the restoration of the monarchy and thus just prior to the canonical 1662 revision of the BCP. The New Testament is Beza's version. The Psalms of David (in English) are also included bound in at the rear of the volume following the end of Revelations, being the King James Version.

-------------------
Provenance:

With a sticker to the front board reading "Lent by Mrs Robertson, Glanton". We believe this to be the wife of Rev. John Robertson (1810-1844) who was formerly called Esther Ainslie and following the marriage, Esther Robertson. She was the younger daughter of Robert Ainslie, a friend of Robert Burns. She was the brother of William Robertson who was of Glanton House hence our attribution of "Mrs Robertson" to Esther Robertson. After writing this we also found a very small ownership inscription of John Robertson dated 1831 which certainly validates this attribution!

Condition:

[t.p., A1-X12 (O.T), 2A1-2G6 (N.T), a1-f4]

Original full calf binding, rubbed to the spine with light wear to joints with both boards securely attached. Some loss at corners. No shelf lean. Two stickers to the front board, the provenance sticker from the early 1800s and a ridged circular sticker inscribed with '350'. Both Old and New Testaments collate as complete, lacks all after f4 in the Psalms of David at the rear thus ending at Psalm 145 so presumably lacking one or two leaves which would take us to the full 150 Psalms. Some discolouration to page edges as typical. Text block mildly toned throughout with some occasional minor stains, for example at the head of the engraved title page. Else a very good example.
