The book is collated as complete in 624pp including the frontispiece and engraved title page. Half calf over marbled boards. The book shows very attractively on the shelf indeed, retaining a lovely tooled black morocco label. Some light wear to spine with discolouration to raised bands and slight loss to the gilt. Some very minor wear to the head and foot of the spine as typical, with corresponding shelf and edge wear. Some wear to corners with slight deformation. No shelf lean. The book is structurally excellent without any separation at the hinge or from the backstrip as commonly befalls this book. Some scuffs to the boards, though much better than typically found. Some minor dulling to top page edge, others very good. Bookplate to front pastedown. Contemporary pastedowns and endpapers. The text block is excellent, mildly toned but very clean and significantly better than typical. The plates have some minor oxidation and light foxing/staining but again, are far better than typically found as the plates in this book are usually very heavily oxidised. This is probably the best example of this book we have come across to date, and we have come across quite a few!
An excellent example in its first state throughout.
