Il Decamerone di M. Giovanni Boccaccio Nuouamente Corretto et Con Diligentia Stampato. 1527 (but 1729).

The colophon states this was published in 1527 by Philippo di Giunta, but it is actually the very famous historic facsimile of Giunta's 1527 edition which is noted as a very finely produced and particularly deceptive replication which was produced in Venice in 1729 by Angelo Pasinelli at the expense of Joseph Smith, the British Consul.

-------------------

Most bibliographies of this work give a print run of just 300 copies, many of which were burnt at a warehouse fire making it quite a scarce edition indeed. It is actually quite difficult to distinguish this with the 1527 original, but the main difference is the corrected pagination of pages 42, 101, and 108, which were incorrectly paginated in the original.

Size: 185 x 250 x 40 mm (approx.)

Condition:

Probably original binding is very attractive. Spine dulled but shows well on the shelf, retaining its original tooled morocco label which reads 'Il Decameron di Boccaccio'. Front joints cracked but with both boards securely attached. Some light scratches and discolouration to boards with intricate gilt borders bright and attractive. All edges gilt, top edge dulled. Some minor shelf and edge wear. Bookplate to front pastedown of Ascot Lodge with an ink date of 1893. Piece of paper glued to front free endpaper with an 1892 date with another piece of paper glued to verso of title page with some relevance to the Decameron and some ink writing to this leaf dated 1888. Some writing to title page, one dated 1884. The rest of the text block, save for some small initials to the top of AA2 is without any writing. Some minor staining affecting a few leaves throughout but mostly the text block is very clean and bright and shows well.
