Camden's Britannia, Newly Translated Into English: With Large Additions and Improvements. Published by Edmund Gibson, of Queens-College in Oxford. London: Printed by F. Collins for A. Swalle, and A. & J. Churchil, 1695.

FIRST EDITION OF CAMDEN'S BRITTANIA IN GIBSON'S TRANSLATED ENGLISH, COMPLETE WITH ALL MAPS, PRESENTED IN AN ATTRACTIVE MODERN BINDING.

-------------------

This edition is the first to contain Robert Morden's famous maps of the various counties across Great Britain and is rare to find complete with the suite of these maps as these are often excised to be framed and sold separately. However our copy is well preserved with all maps present, see the condition description for full details.

Ink ownership inscription to title of "Capt. Barford of the 61 Regim't.". Stamp of the Public Taunton Library. Ownership inscription of "Alice Nyche Glugh."

Modern attractive fine binding, full morocco, tooled in gilt to spine with triple ruled gilt boards. Some minor discolouration and rubbing in places, minor scratches, with a little loss to the leather of the rear board and a small indent. Minor shelf wear. Both boards securely attached, binding secure. Stands straight without shelf lean, shows very well on the shelf.

With 49 large double spread maps, 1 single leaf map (this map has loss of half and is supposed to be a double spread map), 8 single leaf plates, and 1 single leaf plate with text on the verso. Frontis and title remounted with marginal loss, pictured. Ink ownership inscription to the head of the title page. Small tape repair and white mark to the verso of the title page. Some old stamps to a small number of leaves and maps of the Public Taunton Library. Occasional marginal repairs to leaves, finely executed, with a small number of leaves with slight loss of text, some loss to edges more prominent to a small number of leaves. A well restored copy. Ink smudge to the bottom corner of a2v. Ink inscription to the head of D1r. Some repairs to maps and plates, with occasional minor loss at edges. Sporadic marginalia. Occasional marks and very minor dampstaining, but generally bright and clean throughout as pictured. Very minor wormholing to a small number of leaves. Tipped in small piece of paper with an early ink inscription between 4N2 and a1. The single leaf map facing columns 129/130 is lacking half of the map as previously mentioned. Attractive manuscript list of maps on the final blank's recto including page numbers of their location in the book, another MS list on verso of final textual leaf.

A lovely copy of this scarce first edition of Gibson's translation of Camden's Brittania into English with the suite of Morden's finely engraved maps.
