FIRST EDITION of the official account of Captain Cook's first voyage, rare with all three volumes in their first edition state as with the present copy, and especially desirable with the huge foldout Magellan Chart which is most often lacking, but is here extant. This copy retains 43 of the charts, maps, and plates, most of which are foldouts, as well as the complete text in near contemporary bindings.

Attractive near contemporary (c.1800) full calf, repeating gilt ship in spine compartments between raised bands, each volume retaining its original tooled red morocco label, date tooled in gilt to foot of each. Bindings rubbed, shelf and edge wear. Both boards of volume three attached with that binding secure. Front board of volume one and two detached, rear boards attached. First few quires of vols I+II also detached but all extant. Volume I retains the very large foldout Magellan Chart which is usually missing. Bookplate to front pastedown with motto 'Loyal en Tout' which belongs to the Earl of Kenmare, with another later bookplate to ffep recto of Jean-Paul Taris. Textually complete. Vol I contains 12 maps, 9 of which are foldout, plus 7 foldout plates, as well as the Magellan Chart. Vol II contains 5 foldout maps plus 14 plates, 10 of which are foldout. Vol III contains 4 plates, 2 of which are foldout. Some light pencil marginalia and underlining to first two volumes. Some sporadic foxing, minor stains, intermittent toning, else generally very clean throughout, some plates offset to verso pages as typical. Total of 43 charts, maps, and plates, of the 53 called for, though very few copies retain the full suite.
