A Collection of the Learned Doctors who, in their own works, when citing passages of the Council of Trent, have incidentally treated the matters contained therein, and have resolved various questions most useful and necessary for those engaged in ecclesiastical jurisdiction. […]. By Augustinus Barbosa. Venice: At the press of Paulus Baleonius, 1643, folio.

This work gathers and organises the opinions of leading Catholic theologians and canonists who, in commenting on or referencing the Council of Trent, addressed its doctrinal and disciplinary decrees in their own writings. Barbosa systematically extracts, compares, and reconciles their interpretations, using them to clarify complex legal and theological questions relevant to the ecclesiastical courts. In essence, Barbosa’s Collectanea Doctorum serves as a reference work for canon lawyers and ecclesiastical judges, providing authoritative guidance on how the decrees of the Council of Trent were to be understood and applied in practice.

Provenance:

Bookplate from the Bibliothecae Seminarii Diocesani S. Josephi, Loïdis (possibly Lodi, Italy).

Found inside this book was also a loose note in a neat hand reading “All’Illmo, e Rmo Sig. Sig. Padrone Colmo Monsig’r Ipari Vescovo di Segni”, which, translated, says “To the Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Lord, my most honoured Patron, Monsignor (Ipari?), Bishop of Segni”, and therefore this copy was possibly given to the aforementioned person.
