The Quarterly Review. Vols. 106-109. London: John Murray, 1859-1861.

THE VERY RARE FIRST PRINTED REVIEW OF CHARLES DARWIN'S ORIGIN OF SPECIES. SIGNIFICANTLY RARER THAN THE LATER AMERICAN PRINTING!

"WITH MR. DARWIN'S 'ARGUMENT' WE MAY SAY IN THE OUTSET THAT WE SHALL HAVE MUCH AND GRAVE FAULT TO FIND"

Volume 108 of the London Quarterly Review contains the first printed review of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, and one of the only references to it in print during the time of its publication. It is found on pages 225-264 and is fascinating for a first hand account of the preliminary views of Darwin's theories of Natural Selection.

COMPLETE WITH THE ERRATA SLIP!

This is the London printing, much rarer than the later American printing. The American printing last sold for $625 (USD) at auction (1/12/23, Swann Auction Galleries, lot 245).

Half brown calf over green boards with red tooled labels between raised bands on spines. Bindings rubbed with small losses of leather, more so to extremities and corners of boards. All boards but the front board of volume 109 attached with joints and hinges starting. Shelf and edge wear. Red page edges dulled more so to top page edges as typical. Edge toning to endpapers are commensurate with the leather bindings. Text blocks clean with edge toning and occasional foxing. Endpapers and title pages prominently foxed.
