FIRST EDITION, probably the third printing. This contains the infamous original Oooma-Loompa illustrations with the 6 line 'About the author' section in the colophon. No date later than 1964 is mentioned but many bibliographers of Dahl have supposed this printing to have been printed circa 1970, though was probably printed prior to this. It is predominantly distinguished of course for the absence of the red or blue cloth binding, instead being in half brown cloth over white blindstamped boards.

Original publisher's quarter brown cloth binding over white blindstamped boards with the original green endpapers. Gilt to spine worn with some loss, also slightly rubbed. White boards with some discolouration and light marks but generally remain good. Shelf wear with minor loss at corners. Binding slightly cocked but without shelf lean. Without any bookplates or ownership inscriptions. Front pastedown with a bit of discolouration at edges. Very clean and bright through the text block, collated as complete.
