Dante's Divine Comedy 1491: An Incunable Dante
Dante's Divine Comedy 1491: An Incunable Dante
Dante Alighieri, Divina Commedia. Vinegia, Petrus de Piasiis, 18th November 1491.
THE 12TH OVERALL EDITION OF DANTE. A DEFECTIVE COPY OF THIS SCARCE INCUNABLE, PRINTED IN 1491.
-------------------
The 12th edition of Dante's Divine Comedy according to Goff's bibliography of incunabula following the first in 1472, thus one of the earliest obtainable editions of Dante, printed within 20 years of the unobtainable first edition. Incunable editions of Dante are very rare to the market, and practically unheard of under £10,000. This is a defective copy, lacking many leaves, etc, and priced very competitively accordingly.

Size: 225 x 320 mm (approx.)
Condition:
199ff of 310ff, lacking many leaves, but an exceedingly scarce incunable copy of Dante nonetheless with beautiful typography throughout. Later full vellum, spine circa the late 16th century to early/mid 17th century, 'Dante 1491' written in manuscript at head of spine, vellum backed boards probably a little later, c.1750. Binding rubbed with some losses but generally very presentable indeed, particularly on the shelf. The leaves are disbound from the binding, backstrip separated from page block. The leaves are generally very presentable with some occasional marginal dampstaining/foxing as typical, but are largely bright and attractive. Some contemporary to near contemporary marginalia in places.
