The Vision of Hell. By Dante Alighieri. Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary and Illustrated with the Designs of M. Gustave Dore. London: Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, 1868, folio.

A STUNNING EDITION OF DANTE'S INFERNO IN ENGLISH BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED THROUGHOUT BY GUSTAVE DORE IN A STUNNING HUGE FOLIO BLACK BINDING!

-------------------

It is generally very difficult to find this edition in as beautiful condition and in such a lovely binding for less than the low thousands of pounds (GBP). This is perhaps the finest edition of Dante's Inferno in English it is possible to own. The binding is certainly applicable to the content of it and is very looming and ominous with the boards subtlety blindstamped in a kind of tree root pattern.
This volume has 75 full page illustrations by Gustave Dore throughout who continues to this day to be regarded as the finest illustrator of Dante's works. In an even more fantastic fashion, each plate is here accompanied with a verso descriptive letterpress tissue guard.

Size: 301 x 372 mm (approx.)

Condition:

[xxiv, 183pp, 75 plates (throughout)]

Modern black half calf over intricately blindstamped boards retaining an earlier tooled morocco label which reads "Dante's Inferno". Externally very good to near fine with boards a little rubbed and scuffed but overall very nice indeed with leather near fine to fine, loss to early tooled morocco label. Without any attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions. Lacking original blanks. Minor dampstaining at the foot of the frontis, some minor colour transfer to verso title page. Else generally exceptionally clean throughout the text block, tissue guards occasionally a little toned as typical.

A beautiful edition in excellent condition overall.
