John Ellis (1598-1665) was a clergyman and writer on religion. He was part of the Welsh Anglicans. In his will, he left some money to be given as salary for a schoolmaster to be employed in Dolgellau, which was the basis for the foundation of the Dolgellau Grammar School.
The thirty-nine articles of the Church of England were the basis for the establishment of the Church of England. The articles gave clear guidance of the terms, practices, and beliefs of the church. They also explained the position of the Church of England in relation to other Christian denominations, ie. Catholicism, Calvinism, and Anabaptism.
The Lambeth Articles came about in 1595 and were nine doctrinal statements which are an addition to the thirty-nine articles of the Church of England. The addition was meant to be a clarification on the official teachings of the Church. However, Queen Elizabeth I refused to authorise the Lambeth Articles so they were never passed in England; The Church of Ireland made some adaptations to the articles and passed them in 1615.
