Provenance:

Bookplate of Francis H. D. C. Whitmore. Likely to belong to the Colonel Sir Francis Henry Douglas Charlton Whitmore (1872-1962), 1st Baronet, who was an officer in the British military and a landowner in Essex, inheriting Orsett Hall from his father, who came to own the house from a man who lost the hall due to gambling debt.

Half brown calf over marbled paper backed boards with a black tooled label to the spine. Crude repairs to the head and bottom of the spine, made of two strips of leather overlapping the spine and partially both boards. The bottom repair torn at the front hinge. Binding rubbed and scuffed. Front board mostly detached, very loosely attached at the top with the repair, very fragile. Rear board attached with cracked joint and hinge starting. Shelf and edge wear. Red spotted page edges dulled and toned. Spine somewhat cocked. Bookplate attached to ffep with two pencil inscriptions. Text block very clean with light edge toning and occasional foxing and marks. All plates present, two being bound a page or two away from where they should be based on the list of plates.
