A magnificent Catholic Bible, printed in large format, undated, but circa 1860, in a beautiful fine binding.

Contemporary very fine binding, bound in full black morocco, finely tooled in gilt to the spine and both boards, the front board with a cross design in the centre with a decorative motif gilt border, the rear board with the same gilt border but finely blindstamped in a panelled design. Binding rubbed with some discolouration in places, a small white stain at the foot of the front board. Very attractive indeed. Some light rubbing to raised bands of spine and extremities, else the spine shows beautifully on the shelf. Joints rubbed, starting to crack at the extremities on the front but with the hinges reinforced with cloth. Both boards are securely attached, the binding is secure and without shelf lean. All edges gilt, with the typical scratches and minor discolouration, but generally remaining presentable. No attached bookplates, with the blanks all free of writing, but with the ink inscription to the verso of the second title page which reads "Jacobus Yorke Bramston. Epus. (?) at in Districti Londinensi Vicarius Apostolicus". Some heaving foxing to endpapers but the text block largely clean throughout, illustrated plates foxed occasional with some minor offsetting. The text block is without damp staining and is fully legible throughout, and collates as complete.
