Provenance:
The bookplate and ownership stamp of John Hope, Advocate. The bookplate bearing the motto "at spes non fracta" (but hope is not broken).
This bookplate is likely to belong to the Scottish lawyer John Hope (1807-1893), who was also a philanthropist and campaigner focusing on the welfare of the working class and on education.

Full brown calf binding, rubbed and scuffed. Lacking tooled label. Front board detached. Rear board with cracked joint and hinge, thus fragile. Shelf and edge wear. Edge toning to endpapers. Text block fairly clean with toning and occasional foxing. Bookplate attached to front pastedown. Ownership stamp to the main title page.
