VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of James Adams' important work which received the thanks of the Royal Society. A facsimile was printed in 1968 by the Scolar Press owing to the scarcity of this 1794 first edition.

Illustrated with two religious plates, the frontispiece and one plate at the back, alongside the illustrated title page. Depictions include the cross, the trumpet of God, and skulls among others, the frontispiece being reminiscent of a depiction of the book of Revelations and the others having themes of memento mori skulls etc.

Paper binding with very minor rubbing, creasing, and general wear. Boards with small paper residue fragments. Handwritten paper label attached to spine. New paper attached over the front pastedown and extending and covering half of the ffep. Small pencil inscription of referencing on ffep. Damp stain to the frontispiece. Pen gift inscription to the top of the title page. Text block lightly toned with very sporadic very minor foxing, and with some very light creasing. Page edges unevenly cut. Very small number of very small pen corrections (typically a letter or two). Small number of leaves more foxed than others.
