An excellent Cathedral Binding, stamped in gilt to the foot of the front board "J. Gastell, 1837." A beautiful example of a very popular style of binding through the early 19th century.

Condition:
Near contemporary Cathedral binding, black calf intricately stamped in blind with title tooled in gilt with "J. Gastell, 1837" in gilt to the foot of the spine, probably the commissioner, but perhaps the binder. Binding rubbed to extremities and joints. Both boards are securely attached, hinges cracked. Green endpapers. All edges gilt. Internally toned with some very minor foxing in a few places sporadically, else generally internally good.
