Handbook of the Latest Genealogy and Heraldry, in which are included the family trees and coats of arms of all current European potentates. By Johann Christoph Gatterer, 1763.
-------------------
A fantastic genealogical and heraldic work printed in a beautiful gothic German script with some of the finest engraved plates we have ever encountered placed abundantly throughout the text. There are also some foldout plates bound in at the rear.
-------------------
Size: 134 x 209 mm (approx.)
Condition:
Contemporary full calf binding, retaining its original tooled morocco label. Spine decorated in gilt in compartments between slightly raised bands. Binding rubbed with some loss at the head of the backstrip, boards both very good or better. Joints rubbed but remain uncracked with both boards securely attached, the binding is secure and does not lean on the shelf. Page edges are very good but have lost much of the original red colouring, as typical. No attached booklates, but with some stamps to the ffep verso, including from "The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, The Seal of the Trustees", as well as a now erased near contemporary ownership inscription, and a sticker with what is presumably a shelf reference number. Small ink ownership inscription, contemporary, to head of title page. Very clean throughout the text block, mildly toned as typical, but generally excellent. Six foldout plates bound in at the rear as called for. Largely illegible relatively long ink inscription to the final blank, seemingly contemporary, but appears to be in a different hand than the ownership inscription to the title page. A complex pagination and so no collation is provided, but the book appears to collate as complete with the very abundant number of very finely engraved plates throughout, including the six to the rear.
A fantastic copy of a very rare book.
