Thucydides Cum Scholiis et Antiquis et Utilisus sine Quibus autor intellectu multum est difficilis. [...]. Basileae: Ex Officina Hervagiana [Johann Herwagen], 1540, folio.

-------------------

THE THIRD EDITION OF THUCYDIDES IN GREEK, following the 1502 princeps, being one of the earliest obtainable copies of Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War in the original language. This edition was the greatest scholarly edition to this point, with the humanist edits by the foremost classical scholar of the period, Joachim Camerarius. Estienne's later edition was dedicated to this editor. A beautiful edition with attractive type and notably generous margins evidently owing itself to study. This is the first Herwagen edition of Thucydides.

Early to mid 20th century full smooth calf, spine uniformly sunned, some stains, repeating gilt motif to compartments of spine between raised bands, tooled red morocco title label, 1540 date in gilt to foot. Shows well on the shelf. Rubbed, scuffs to boards, but with the binding secure, boards securely attached. Some spotting. Frequently interesting and amusing marginalia throughout in an English hand. Some faded dampstaining in lower blank marginal space, mostly imperceptible, attractive typography with historiated initials. Colophon leaf extant. Textually collates as complete with the t6 blank present (usually wanting), but without F10 (blank). A superior copy of this scarce early edition of Thucydides in Greek.
