German Popular Stories [Grimm's Fairy Tales], Translated from the kinder und hans Marchen. Collected by M.M. Grimm. From Oral Tradition. Volume Two. London: James & Joseph Robins, 1826.

-------------------

The famous first English language publication of the most influential compilation of fairy tales. Translated into English by Edgar Taylor, the publication of this launched an era in which folklore and fairy tales would stimulate writers to produce an increasingly imaginative literature for children. This publication laid the foundation for the huge growth of the children's book genre, with later works like Alice In Wonderland and the Jungle Books relying on a fantastical basis essentially popularised into English speaking culture by the Brothers Grimm.

This is volume two only, of two, the scarcer of the two volumes, containing the following stories: The Goose Girl, Faithful John, The Blue Light, Ashputtel [i.e. Cinderella], The Young Giant and the Tailor, The Crows and the Soldier, Peewit, Hans and His Wife, Cherry or The Frog Bride, Mother Holle, The Water of Life, Peter the Goatherd, The Four Clever Brothers, The Elfin Grove, The Salad, The Nose, The Five Servants, Catskin, The Robber Bridegroom, The Three Sluggards, The Seven Ravens, Roland and Maybird, The Mouse The Bird and The Sausage, and The Juniper Tree.

Without attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions, internally exceptionally clean, some mild offsetting to versos of illustrations as typical, mild toning. Original blanks present alongside some later blanks contemporaneous to the rebinding, c.1880. Internally very good. An excellent copy of the scarce second volume of the first English edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales.
