Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver (Jonathan Swift). London: Benj. Motte, 1726, 8vo.
-------------------
FIRST EDITION, third issue (Teerink's state B) of Gulliver's Travels, one of the most enduring and classic novels of the 18th century. This is volume one only, of two, but contains the full accounts of the Voyage to Lilliput and Voyage to Brobdingnag and is complete with the maps and frontispiece (vertical chainline state). Presented here is a very scarce opportunity to acquire this most classic work. This state of the first edition was printed in December, where the extremely rare first state was printed at the end of October in 1726. The Teerink A first state is typically valued circa £50,000-£100,000.

Size: 125 x 200 mm (approx.)
Condition:
[(2), frontis, A8 (+map), B-K8, L4, M-X8, Y1, (2)]
Contemporary full panelled calf binding, clear tape across the spine and edges of boards as pictured, not too intrusive aesthetically. Front board detached, rear attached and secure, but with joints cracked. Binding rubbed, dry, minor loss, but generally presentable. Bookplate of Kaulback of Dromderrig to front pastedown in an anachronistic style (i.e. Roy James Alfred Kaulback, 1911-1996). Ffep detached but present with a contemporary English ownership inscription at the head. Second blank slightly loose but attached, thereafter the leaves are all securely attached. Ink ownership inscription to head of main title page, pictured. Text block toned, some minor scattered spotting and small marks, but generally clean and well preserved throughout the text, internally a very attractive copy indeed, with the full text legible without loss of sense. Parts one and two only, of four (i.e. volume one of two), but collates as complete for these extant two parts.
[Teerink 289; PMM 185].
