The Iliad of Homer. Translated by Alexander Pope. London: Henry Lintot, 1743.
-------------------
A lovely early copy of the Alexander Pope translation into English of Homer's Iliad preserved in contemporary calf bindings, attractively illustrated, and with a nice clean text.
-------------------
Size: 96 x 169 mm (approx., each)
Condition:
Contemporary full Cambridge panelled calf bindings, rubbed and worn, but attractive, some volumes partially preserving early MS paper title labels. Joints rubbed, some cracked, with boards attached, slightly fragile, front board of fifth volume nearly detached, but an attractive set, particularly the boards which are lovely examples of the Cambridge style. Small contemporary shelf reference mark to upper front pastedown, 'S.S' stamp to title page (unidentified origin, plausibly ecclesiastical). Endpapers and pastedowns mildly edge toned as commensurate with the bindings. Text blocks mildly toned, mild spotting, else generally clean throughout.
An attractive early edition of Alexander Pope's famous translation of Homer's Iliad.
