William Howitt (1792 – 1879), was a prolific English writer on history and other subjects. He was friends with Elizabeth Gaskell and was a very influential writer, being quoted in Karl Marx's Das Capital Volume 1 and many other important works. He wrote approximately 50 books, and his wife wrote over 100 (inclusive of her translations).


This book includes a view of Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, Abraham Cowley, John Milton, Samuel Butler, John Dryden, Joseph Addison, Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, John Keats, Lord Byron, and a significant number of other prominent British poets.

Near contemporary full calf. The spine affixed with a tooled red morocco label between raised bands with intricate gilt in compartments. The spine is in near fine to fine condition, very lightly rubbed. Joints fine with both boards securely attached, the binding secure and without shelf lean. Light shelf wear. Boards near fine with some minor surface discolouration. Page edges near fine to fine with top edge slightly dulled. No attached bookplates. A few small spots of foxing to endpapers else very clean and bright through the text block. Collated as complete in 706pp with the 42 in-text illustrations at the beginning of each chapter depicting the various locations (Ludlow Castle, Abbotsford, etc).
