"ALL MODERN AMERICAN LITERATURE COMES FROM ONE BOOK BY MARK TWAIN CALLED HUCKLEBERRY FINN"

- Ernest Hemingway

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. (Tom Sawyer’s Comrade). By Mark Twain. With One Hundred and Seventy-Four Illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885

-------------------

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of one of the greatest classics of American literature. This copy is preserved in the iconic original publisher’s green pictorial cloth binding.

This copy has all of the first issue points required, to include "Decided" for "Decides" on pp.9, the erroneous page reference "88" for the plate "Him and Another Man" at pp.13, and on pp.57 line 23, the misprint "with the was" for "with the saw". All of the various other points do not have any priority between the early printings of the first edition. This copy does however contain the two other points: pp.143, line 7 part of the “b" in “body” is broken, and on pp.155, the final 5 is in a different font. The title in this copy is a cancel with the copyright notice dated 1884. This is the second state, but the first state is only found in the prospectus and advance sheets and so is as expected. The portrait frontispiece is also of the second state, no priority.

A well preserved and overall attractive example of one of the most desirable and iconic books of 19th century American literature in the first issue state of the first US edition.

Condition:

[(2), h.t/frontis, frontis, t.p., 6ff, 17-366, (2)]

Original publisher's green cloth binding, a bit rubbed with some prominent scratches to the rear board, but generally very attractive externally. Both boards are securely attached, the binding is secure, and stands without shelf lean. Binding is not cocked. Wear to corners. Pencil inscriptions to front pastedown and ffep verso. Collates as complete. Exceptionally clean throughout the text, no marginalia. Minor dampstaining to foot of pp.353, continuing and becoming more prominent until the end of the book, never touching the text and only in the bottom marginal space. A good copy of a scarce and iconic book.
