FIRST EDITION. In the far rarer six larger format cloth bindings which were intended to be discarded so as to be bound in the usual two volumes. This was the subscriber's edition, not available from ordinary booksellers at the time. This is a significantly better example than as typically encountered.

Full red publisher's cloth with character designs. Bindings lightly worn with some rubbing and scuffing. Spines a little sunned. Shelf and edge wear. Page edges foxed with some marks. Shelf lean. Text blocks very clean with light toning and occasional foxing. One leaf loose in volume six, unnumbered, possibly associated ephemeral material rather than part of the book as published. Sticker attached to rear pastedown in all volumes, pictured in the final photo.
