FIRST EDITION FIRST IMPRESSION of what many consider to be Walter Scott's magnum opus, and certainly one of the most important works of the 19th century, coming at a revolutionary time in British literature, in the time of Jane Austen, the Brontes, Mary Shelley, etc. An excellent example of this first edition.
With all prerequisite first issue points present: Volume I: pp.159-306 mispaginated as 151-298, pp.iii with "9" signature, "Peter" on pp.iv line 6, etc, as well as the relevant first issue points in volumes two and tree.

Contemporary quarter navy morocco over marbled paper backed boards with gilt titles and volume numbers to spines. Bindings with very minor signs of wear, some minor toning, very minor and faint marks, and few very minor scratches. All boards attached with minor wear to joints and hinges. Shelf and edge wear. Marbled page edges somewhat dulled with the top edges darkened. Bookplate attached to front pastedowns and binder's sticker attached to front blanks. Text blocks very clean with light toning and some foxing. Dark mark to the gutter between pp.80 and pp.81 in volume one. Pp.1/2 in volume two partially detached. Very small hole to the bottom of pp.3/4 in volume two, not affecting any text or legibility. Without the 3pp. catalogue rarely found at the rear of vol 3.
