Jacobi Usserii Armachani De Graeca Septuaginta, Interpretum Versione Syntagma: Cum Libri Estherae Editione Origenica, et vetere Graeca altera, Ex Arundelliana Bibliotheca nunc primum in lucem producta. [...]. Londini: Johannem Crook, 1655.

-------------------

FIRST EDITION of Ussher’s final and one of his most intellectually mature works, issued in the year before his death. This is the earliest substantial critical study of the Septuagint, in which Ussher undertakes a rigorous comparison between the Greek translation of the Old Testament and the Hebrew text, addressing questions of textual authority, transmission, and fidelity with a degree of philological precision rare for the period.

Scarce in commerce, but well represented institutionally.

Size: 152 x 198 mm (approx.)

Condition:

[(1), A2, B-O4, P2, Q-X4, 2A-2G4, 2H1, (2)]

Contemporary full vellum, mild discolouration, minor wear, title in MS ink to upper spine. Binding secure with both boards securely attached, boards slightly splay outwards as is typical for limp vellum, but the book does stand on the shelf. Small bookplate sticker to front pastedown with a shelf reference next to it, large contemporary neat inscription to ffep verso opposing the title page. Textually collates as complete, possibly lacking two leaves at the rear, but those may be the two blanks which are present in this copy (USTC is unclear, but the pagination is correct). Small dampstain in lower gutter throughout, but not touching the text. Text block mildly toned, a few occasional small marks, intermittent toning, else internally a clean well presented copy.
