Jamieson's Holy Bible c.1860s
Jamieson's Holy Bible c.1860s
The Holy Bible with a Devotional and Practical Commentary. By the Rev. R. Jamieson & the Rev. E.H. Bickersteth. London: James S. Virtue, c.1860-1869.
A MAGNIFICENT PRINTING OF THE BIBLE IN HUGE FORMAT IN A STUNNING FINE BINDING WITH THE INFLUENTIAL COMMENTARY OF R. JAMIESON!
-------------------
Another example of this edition bound into two volumes rather than one as with our example recently sold at Sotheby's for $3,500.
A monumental antique Bible, abundantly illustrated throughout with fine full page illustrations and lovely type throughout, together with the important commentary of Rev. Jamieson, housed in a beautiful contemporary fine binding. The text follows the King James Version.
Bibles of this size were usually intended for use in churches or other religious institutions rather than for private use, and so they are very rare to the market indeed. Given their typical intended use for collective worship, they are beautifully produced books as we see with this Bible.

Size: 290 x 380 x 130 mm (approx.)
Condition:
[frontis, t.p., t.p., iii-iv, i-viii, pp.1-730, frontis, t.p., pp.1-459, [i-v], t.p., pp.1-423, i]
Contemporary full black morocco finely tooled in gilt to both boards and spine. Spine rubbed to extremities and raised bands but generally shows very attractively indeed, especially given its size. Joints rubbed with front joints cracked. Both boards are attached with the front fragile, secured by tape at the hinge. Gilt dulled but remains attractive. Shelf and edge wear with minor losses at corners. Original endpapers and tissue guards for plates present. Collated as complete through each section including the four title pages throughout, three through the O.T. and one for the start of the N.T. as called for. Without any attached bookplates or ownership inscriptions, with the family records leaves (here bound prior to the N.T) all blank. Text block mildly toned throughout as typical but generally internally excellent throughout with many illustrations similarly excellent, though with many foxed and offset to verso pages as expected.
A magnificent antique KJV Bible with Jamieson's famous commentary.
