Provenance:

The armorial bookplate of George Cranston, Lord Corehouse with the motto "Thou Shalt Want Ere I Want". A small collection of his books, 41 volumes, can be found at the the Faculty of Advocates (a service offering accessible legal advice in Scotland since 1532, with a legal resource library), which was donated by Major Gordon in 1951, one of George's descendants. The Faculty of Advocates' website says the following about him, "Lord Corehouse became Dean of Faculty in 1823, but in 1829 he was struck by paralysis and retired from official duties. He was a lifelong friend of Sir Walter Scott. The collection of mainly 18th century law works is notable for its bindings", this quotation is followed by a photo of the bookplate.

Size: 138 x 210 mm (approx., each)

Condition:

[(2), xl, 542pp., 6 foldout plates, (2)]; [(2), xx, 710pp., 2pp. (advertisements), (2)]

Contemporary half calf with gilt titles and volume numbers between raised bands. Binding rubbed with a little loss to the head of the backstrip of volume one. Joints cracked but with all boards attached securely. Bindings secure with a slight shelf lean but remaining vertically stable. Boards very good or better. Shelf and edge wear with some loss. Bindings warped, particularly the first volume due to the fold-out plates at the back, which has warped the boards significantly, but the volumes still show nicely on the shelf. Top page edges uniformly dulled as typical. Bookplate to front pastedown of all volumes offset to the verso blank. Some very light foxing to the endpapers, else, very clean throughout. Foldouts a little uneven at the edges as typical with the occasional small tear at the join to the page block as typical, else, very nice.
