The authorised Latin and Greek translations of the Prayer Book in England were mainly for scholars, university individuals, and those in the Irish clergy and congregations who couldn't read or speak English. However, they weren't practical for congregational worship and mostly served as historical markers of the resurgence of classical learning.
Translations for non-English speakers in Great Britain and nearby areas were arranged for congregational use. Five languages received translations, with French being deemed most significant. The first French translation was commissioned by Sir Hugh Paulet in 1549, indicating support for the Protestant cause. Later, in 1662, Jean Durel hastily prepared a revised French translation that gained royal endorsement for use in various French conforming congregations, including those in Jersey and Guernsey, following the 1662 revision of the Book of Common Prayer after the reformation.
This translation by Durel, established as the sole authorised French version by royal decree in 1662, saw multiple reprints over a century. Notably, editions in 1689 and 1695 are part of the Benton collection, the latter including additional sections like prayers for maritime use, state-services in French, Anglican Church articles of faith, and explanations regarding baptismal practices. The 1695 edition also featured an excellent engraved frontispiece and had a double column format. That 1695 reprint of the post reformation reformulation of the Liturgy book is what is here for sale.

Collated as complete including the beautiful illustrated frontispiece which was not present in the previous printings of this Liturgy book. Early to mid 18th century full red leather binding, rubbed without loss. Boards sunned thus discoloured at edges. Joints rubbed with both boards securely attached. No shelf lean. All edges gilt, top edge dulled as typical. Shelf wear with minor losses at corners. Bookplate of Henry Robert to front pastedown. Later endpapers laid over earlier ones. Two early ink ownership inscriptions to ffep, one reading G Chester, the other illegible. Page block trimmed for the binding with a little loss at the head of the main title page else without loss throughout. Text block mildly toned but generally clean throughout. Some ink marks on the final page (pp.344) not affecting the legibility of the text of that page.
