An Exposition on the Old and New Testament. In Three Volumes. [...]. By Matthew Henry. York: L. Pennington, 1786-1788, folio.

-------------------

A magnificent extremely large 3 volume set of Matthew Henry's important Biblical commentary. An exceedingly rare edition for which we could not trace any sales records and for which WorldCat records a very small number of copies held institutionally, possibly as little as four copies worldwide.

An institutional copy held in Ireland describes this as originally being released in 179 separate parts, which may well explain its scarcity! An impressive set of huge proportions.

Condition:

[(2), frontis, t.p., iii-v, 968, (2)]; [(2), t.p., 975pp, (2)]; [(2), t.p., 915pp, (2)]

Uniform contemporary half calf bindings over cloth backed boards, a little rubbed but generally very attractive indeed with very large proportions, best stored laid flat. Rear board of second volume near detached with joints cracked, other boards all securely attached, some joints starting but all generally secure. Some of the cloth on the boards has come loose, some lacking, as often. Generally internally very clean, text occasionally a little offset/mildly toned, but largely free of foxing, etc. Final leaf of text in third volume a little ink stained, rear blank slightly torn. The occasional minor spot/stain in places but largely very clean throughout all three vols. A very rare set of huge proportions!
