Provenance:

Armorial bookplate of Edward Lord Suffield with the motto "aeguanimiter" (calmly). Edward Harbort, the Third Baron of Suffield, (1781-1835) was a politician, serving as a parliamentary representative for Great Yarmouth and later for Shaftesbury. He advocated for people's rights, such as campaigning for the abolition of slavery, investigating the mishandling of public demonstrations, advocating for the improvement of prison discipline, and for the improvement of vagrancy laws.

Condition:

Full brown calf bindings with red tooled labels in compartments to the spines between raised bands, other compartments with gilt borders. Bindings rubbed and scuffed, with marks. Some small losses of leather in places. All boards attached with wear to joints and hinges, some cracked or starting, thus some somewhat fragile. Minor shelf and edge wear. Marbled page edges show well with minor dulling. Bookplate attached to front pastedown in volumes two and three. Text blocks very clean with occasional foxing. Small tear to front blank in volume one.
