-------------------

A breviary is a liturgical book used by the clergy and religious communities to assist in prayer throughout the day and night. It contains prayers, psalms, hymns, and readings. For each canonical hour, there is a prayer/reading appointed to it. This type of liturgical book would most commonly be used by clergy, monks, and nuns, more typically for communal prayer, unlike a book of hours which were used for individual prayer, however, the breviary can also be used for individual worship/devotion.

Early 19th century full calf, titles tooled in gilt between raised bands, with boards lined in gilt with blind stamped edges. All edges gilt. Clasps attached to binding, a little tight and so can be closed and are functional, but are best left open. Binding a little rubbed with boards scuffed, minor losses at extremities. Both boards are securely attached. Hinges cracked, but with the page secure in the binding. No shelf lean. Without any attached bookplates, but with a relatively recent blue ink ownership inscription at the top of the ffep. Some foxing to main title page, else generally very clean throughout. Text printed in black and red. Some later amendments both in marginalia and, at the rear of the book, pasted in text.
