Mythographi Latini. Amstelodami: Viduam Joannis a Someren, 1681.
-------------------
FIRST EDITION of a very curious two-volume set which collects together classical and medieval mythology from various writers including Fulgentius, Alberic of London, Hyginus, and others, where Greco-Roman mythology is condensed and presented in an allegorical/moralised form. It principally covers fables, astronomy, and astrology. This work was edited by Thomas Muncker, with an attractive engraved portrait of him, and includes some rather attractive woodcuts.
-------------------
Size: 123 x 197 mm (approx., each)
Condition:
Contemporary full calf bindings, rubbed with loss to extremities. Joints cracked, front board of first volume detached, others fragile but attached. Tooled red morocco title labels present but chipped with losses. Nonetheless, the set presents well on the shelf. The notably attractive engraved title leaf is present, as is the portrait of the editor and the suite of illustrations of the signs of the Zodiac, among others. Text blocks toned, but generally clean, legible, and well presented.
