Newtonian Physics 1769; Isaac Newton
Newtonian Physics 1769; Isaac Newton
Institutions Newtoniennes. Par M. Sigorgne, de la Maison et Societe de Sorbonne, [...]. Seconde Edition. Paris: Guillyn, 1769.
-------------------
Pierre Sigorgne (1719-1809) courageously opposed the last defenders of Cartesianism and energetically defended Newton's system. He also took part in numerous philosophical debates, notably against Rousseau. He was Condorcet's correspondent at the Royal Academy of Sciences. "This introduction to Newton's mathematics and physics largely contributed to the dissemination of the theory of universal unity within the French scientific community. A Latin summary of this work became the Newtonian reference in Europe" [Dictionary of Scientific Bibliography].
The rare second edition of this highly influential defence of the ideas contained within Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica.

[(2), t.p., iii-lxx, 2pp, 393pp, 3pp, 7 foldout plates]
Contemporary full calf, very attractive indeed, with spine finely tooled in gilt, retaining its original tooled red morocco label. Binding rubbed but remains significantly better than the typical example. Both boards are securely attached with joints uncracked, the binding secure, and without shelf lean. The 7 foldout plates are on 6 foldout sheets, with two plates on 3/4, as called for. Collates as complete, lacks a very small amount of the marginal space of T1, no text loss. Full text without loss of sense, internally very clean, mildly toned as typical, but generally internally excellent. Remnants of a now removed bookplate to front pastedown, some pencil inscriptions to ffep verso including some bibliographical references, collation, etc.
