Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Politie, Eight Books, by Richard Hooker. London: Andrew Crooke, 1666, folio.

-------------------

Of the Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie by Richard Hooker, published between 1594 and 1597, is a cornerstone of Anglican thought. Hooker defends the Church of England's practices against Puritan critics, advocating for a balanced approach that values reason, tradition, and scripture. He argues that both church and state authority come from divine law, reason, and public consent. This work significantly shaped Anglican theology and political philosophy, particularly the relationship between church and state.

Contemporary full calf binding, rubbed with losses to the leather, joints cracked & exposed with both boards attached but fragile. Some damage to foot of page block at spine. Frontis detached but present, title page trimmed at head. Some worming in places through the text block, generally not causing loss of sense to text. Text block mildly toned but generally clean and legible. A defective copy but in completely original unrestored condition and so rather charming.
