FIRST EDITION
Published by Richard Bentley in 1838 in London in Three Volumes, 8vo.

THE FIRST EDITION OF OLIVER TWIST, IN COMPLETELY ORIGINAL CONDITION IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S CLOTH BINDING WITH THE FRONT AND REAR PANELS MARKED WITH THE STAMPS AS CALLED FOR AND THE ORIGINAL GILT TITLES TO EACH SPINE.

-------------------

With Charles Dickens listed as the author instead of 'Boz' on each title page and without the fireside plate in the third volume and thus a later issue of the first edition as these changes were made from the very first issue within just 7 days from its publication on November 16th 1838.

Size: 13 x 21 cm (approx., each)

Condition:

Collated as complete with half titles to volume one and two only (as called for), 4pp of publisher's advertisements at the rear of volume one and 2pp of advertisements to the front of volume three also present as called for, and the 24 illustrated plates by the legendary illustrator George Cruikshank. Third issue according to Smith and second issue according to several other bibliographers, though Smith take in to account the edition of the original cloth binding without the imprint at the foot of the spine which was very rare and very few examples of this state are known to exist.

Bindings with some discolouration and wear with some discolouration throughout. Some wear at spine head and foot of each volume as typical. All boards are securely attached and the bindings secure. Shelf lean to volume one. Page edges very good. Original yellow endpapers. Bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Light pencil writing to half title of first volume. Text blocks are very clean and in excellent condition, with the plates oxidised as typical, some heavily and others just slightly and those are very good with most being good.
