Orley Farm by Anthony Trollope 1862 First Edition Original Cloth
Orley Farm by Anthony Trollope 1862 First Edition Original Cloth
Orley Farm by Anthony Trollope. With Illustrations by J.E. Millais. London: Chapman and Hall, 1862.
FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S FULL CLOTH BINDINGS. AN EXCELLENT COPY.
-------------------
The scarce first edition of Orley Farm in the original publisher's cloth binding. Strangely, the two volumes were originally published nearly 10 months apart and so the bibliography for this work is very complicated, with Sadleir's bibliography a bit questionable when it comes to issue identification. This copy has the "and they marched" plate opposite pp.73 and the "Mr Furnival's welcome home" plate opposite pp.87, with vertical grain on volume one and horizontal grain on volume two. Bound without the publisher's catalogue which "cannot... be regarded as essential" [Sadleir].

Size: 151 x 230 mm (approx., each)
Condition:
[(1), h.t., frontis, t.p., v-viii, 320pp, (1)]; [(1), h.t., frontis, t.p., v-viii, 320pp, (1)]
Original publisher's full cloth bindings finely decorated in vertical and horizontal grain designs as called for. Spines uniformly sunned, very attractive on the shelf, all boards securely attached, joints uncracked, hinges cracked. Minor rubbing with some small loss at backstrip extremities. Bindings very slightly cocked but without shelf lean.
Both volumes collate as complete except for the publisher's catalogue which is usually lacking and "[not] essential" [Sadleir]. Page block occasionally split in places in gutter, causing non uniformity to fore edges, with some gatherings near detached. Attached bookplate of Marguerite Jequier Bucknall to front pastedown in both vols, ffep in first volume with some light pencil writing. Endpapers toned, else very clean through the text blocks, mildly toned as typical, but generally internally excellent. Full text without loss of sense. A superior copy.
