Contemporary full calf, the boards finely panelled in a Cambridge manner, the spine retaining its original tooled red morocco label. Binding rubbed but generally remains very attractive. Joints rubbed, just starting in places, but with both boards securely attached, the binding secure. A large number of ownership inscriptions to the blanks, main title page, and leaf A3, tracing a large portion of the book's ownership provenance. Top page edge dulled as typical, else very good. No attached bookplates. Endpapers edge toned as commensurate with the calf binding. Text block mildly toned, some minor damp staining to some of the first few leaves in the Paradise Lost text. The full text is fully legible, never with loss of sense to text. The book collates as complete, including the frequent very finely illustrated full page illustrations. The typography is very nice indeed with some very nice decorated capitals and head and tail pieces. A fantastic  early copy of Paradise Lost in a remarkable contemporary fine binding.
