A Threefold Description of Pastoral Care, or Concerning the Office and Power of the Parish Priest, by Augustinus Barbosa. Lyon: Philippe Borde et al., 1665, folio.

-------------------

A substantial and systematic treatise on pastoral theology and canon law by the distinguished Portuguese jurist and bishop Augustinus Barbosa. This is the corrected “ultima editio,” and is a three part exposition of the duties, rights, and authority of the parish priest, encompassing the sacramental, administrative, and moral dimensions of parochial office. This was one of the most complete and serviceable seventeenth century manuals for Catholic parish clergy and surviving copies are notably scarce on the market with most extant copies still residing in ecclesiastical settings. The three parts cover (i) Institution - obligations, (ii) Administration of Sacraments, and (iii) Parish law.
