An Italian Wooded Rocky River Landscape attributed to PAOLO ANESI (1697-1773), oil on oak panel.

-------------------

Italian painter, draughtsman, and engraver Paolo Anesi was born on 9 July 1697, probably in Rome. He was a student of Giuseppe Chiari, Bernardino Fergioni and Sebastiano Conca. He became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and of the Accademia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon. More, he was a friend and collaborator of Giovanni Paolo Panini, Pompeo Batoni and Paolo Monaldi and is often compared to Panini in style (of landscape). He is famous for his vedute, or view, paintings of the Italian landscape.
This attractive composition dates from circa the mid 18th century, c.1760 and is housed in an early 20th century frame.

-------------------

Provenance:

'A. Naysmith' written in ink on the verso of the painting (oak panel), probably circa the early to mid 19th century.

'G. Pepin' written at the foot of the frame on the reverse side, circa the early 20th century.

-------------------

Size incl. frame: 360 x 296 x 33 mm (approx.)

Size excl. frame: 284 x 217 x 10  mm (approx.)

Condition:

Oak panel a little loose in the frame but is held securely by modern nails at the sides of slightly different sizes. Remnants of wallpaper to panel verso as typical, lifting at the edges and thus presumably easily removable if desired. Some historic small woodworm holes to the verso around the top but without any active woodworm. The frame itself with a little discolouration and minor bumps/scratches but remains attractive and suitable for the composition. The painting itself remains bright with some light craquelure in places, without restoration. A very attractive 18th century Italianate landscape.
