Pierre Bayle's Dictionary 1720
Pierre Bayle's Dictionary 1720
Dictionaire Historique et Critique, Par Mr. Pierre Bayle. Troisieme Edition, Revye, Corrigee, et Augmentee Par l'Auteur. Rotterdam: Michel Bohm, 1720, folios.
-------------------
The best edition of Pierre Bayle's important dictionary; "The finest edition, on large paper, scarce, and greatly sought after, called the Edition de regent." (Ebert 1791). PMM writes "For over half a century, until the publication of the Encylopedie, Bayle's Dictionaire dominated enlightened thinking in every part of Europe."
This is the rarer more desirable printing, containing the dedication printed in red and black, and the part on David inserted twice.

Size: 270 x 412 mm (approx., each)
*note, very large.
Condition:
Contemporary full calf, folios, decorated in gilt. The third volume lacks its tooled title label, else all other labels are present. Bindings rubbed, some loss to leather in places, joints starting, but all boards are attached. Rubbing/losses at extremities of spines as typical (headcaps etc). Boards very good or better, being very attractive indeed, Page edges very good, top edges uniformly dulled as typical. Some edge toning to endpapers as commensurate with the calf bindings, as well as commensurate foxing in text block, heavier at each ends, as typical, but largely very clean through all the text blocks, without loss of sense/legibility to text. Bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. A lovely set of this important work.
